  • How to start doing something: startup, application, product.

“I did it my way”, Paul Anka

In the previous post I told how we get stuck on the path of implementing our ideas.

Today we’ll talk about how to get out of stagnation and start acting. I’ll also tell you what I’ve already done for my product.

As bad as it sounds, in order to get things moving, you need to start doing something.

Usually the brain stops working when facing a very big problem or a task that is too vague. And when it faces all together – GAME OVER. So you need to break the task down into very small pieces.

The easiest thing is to take a piece of paper and write. So, take your BIG IDEA and first divide it into sections. For example, draw a circle – IDEA. Divide it into 4 parts and think of what these parts are.

    For example:

    • Sales. How to sell, to attract clients, and who they are.
    • Tech stack. Try to roughly estimate what you will need.
    • Your competencies. What you can do now to start implementing something. Or who you need to find, to ask, to hire.
    • Your competitors. Look who does something similar and how they do it.

Once you do this, it will become a little easier for you. Your mind will begin to perceive a big problem as several areas in which you can do something. And the further you go, the easier it will be for you to understand what needs to be done.

So, don’t put it off, just draw it – as simple and schematic as possible.

    Let’s go deeper.

    Details:

    • Understand who your clients are. Write a post for them, at least one – no matter where. Tell them who you are, what you have in your mind, how you can help them.
    • Have you defined the tech stack? Draw the first couple of screens, show them to your friends, neighbors, barista at the nearest cafe.
    • For example: you have realized that you lack knowledge about clouds. Ask AI how to launch S3, create an account in GCP or AWS, ask your friends whether there are any good specialists. You can text me anytime and I will try to help you.
    • Find competitors. See how they are promoting themselves. If they are on social networks, see what kind of content is the most popular. Take it apart piece by piece, and rewrite it with your own vision.

Later, as you keep doing this, again and again, your mind will get used to the fact that you can do something, and it’s not scary at all.

It’s exactly what I do now, and here is my progress:

    • I found an idea: automation of posting to different platforms.
    • I did the research: who my clients are.
    • I am now getting to understand how to sell. For this I built a simple conversion funnel with the integration of mailchimp service api and AWS Lambda.
    • I defined the tech stack, the platforms (mobile base – flutter, first launch without backend, all integrations and algorithms through front-end and firebase, some of functionality in AWS).
    • I’m doing design now.
    • I analyzed my competitors and identified the weak point of almost all similar applications – I realized how to improve it.

Am I confident in myself and in my ideas? Not always.

I realize that it will most likely fail. But this is experience. And this experience is priceless. It is like armor, like a spare tire that is always with you. And it will help me in my future endeavors.

I hope that I could help you at least a little and you will decide to take the first steps. Damn it – it is not easy, but it is worth it.
